In 1875, the Preserved Fish Company was founded in Eastport, Maine. The company became the first sardine cannery in the state. The founders of the company saw an opportunity when the Franco-Prussian War cut off the traditionally French supply of canned sardines. This 1875 dime recalls the establishment of the first sardine cannery in Maine, but certainly not the last.
