In 1875, William “Boss” Tweed escaped from his New York prison cell and fled to country. He went first to Cuba and then on to Spain, where he was recognized on the street thanks to a circulating cartoon and promptly arrested, turned over to a US warship and returned to New York where he died in the same jail he had broken out from. This 1875 trade dollar recalls this series of unfortunate events in the last years of Boss Tweed.
