In 1876, a class of nine sailors boarded a schooner named the Dobbin in Baltimore, Maryland. The student sailors had enlisted in a two year program at the Revenue Cutter School of Instruction and were the first group of men to do so. This 1876 dime recalls the first class in an institution that would later be called the United States Coast Guard Academy.
