In 1876, the southeast Asian vine, kudzu, made its US debut at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Shortly after, it was introduced into the southeastern United States with the intended purpose of combatting soil erosion. What was not intended was that a fungus native to the US south would have a symbiotic relationship with the Asian vine that would see it proliferate throughout the region at an alarming rate. Currently the kudzu covers and estimated 7,400,000 acres of the US South and is on the Federal Noxious Weed List. This 1876 gold dollar recalls a year that would go on to indefinitely shape the landscape for the South.
