In 1876, a Republic presidential candidate named James G. Blaine was accused of accepting $100,000 worth in bribes for lobbying for railroad companies. Whether true or not, the accusations diminished Blaine’s chances significantly and he would eventually lose to the party nomination to Rutherford B. Hayes who would go on to win the general election. This 1876 nickel recalls what would end up being one of the most contested presidential election in US history.
