In 1881, a deal was struck between Hamilton Disston and the governor of Florida. The deal was that in return for draining the marsh lands around Lake Okeechobee; Disston would receive one half of the reclaimed lands. Disston proceeded to dig eighty miles of drainage canals before running out of money. This 1881 three cent nickel recalls a deal that would have see Disston make a fortune but instead saw him loose everything.
