In 1883, the Kingdom of Hawaii issued coins depicting King Kalakaua I. This 1883 dime was struck in the United States by the San Francisco mint due to perceived shortcoming of earlier pieces minted in Hawaii even though Hawaii would not become a US territory until 1898.
