In 1884, a man named Thomas Stevens rode into Boston on a bicycle known as the penny farthing. The journey he started in San Francisco two years earlier its conclusion made him the first person to cycle across North America. The journey totaled a whopping 3700 miles, a feat made more impressive with the knowledge that it was completed on the uncomfortable high wheeler type of bicycle. Bolstered by this record bike ride, Stevens went on to become the first person to cycle around the entire world. This 1884 gold dollar recalls the completion of this historic expedition.
