In 1895, John Wesley Hardin was shot in the back of the head in El Paso, Texas. Hardin, an infamous Wild West gunslinger, claimed to have killed 42 men over the course of his 42 years. Hardin was murdered by Constable John Selman after he had punched the constable’s son earlier that day. Witnesses say that Selman walked into the saloon where Hardin was rolling dice, walked up behind him and shot him through the head. This 1895 half dollar, minted in San Francisco, could have been in the saloon that night to witness the commotion.
