Armand Hammer, American industrialist, was born in New York City. Sources claim that his parents, Jewish immigrants from Russia, named the industrialist after the symbol for the Socialist Labor Party which depicted an arm wielding a hammer. This 1898 half dollar recalls the birth of the future leader of Occidental Petroleum.
