In 1901, the president’s residence was officially renamed the White House by Theodore Roosevelt. Officially known as the Executive Mansion from its completion in 1792, the British attempted to burn it down during the War of 1812, turning the exterior black with ash. In response, the repaired mansion was painted a bright white. While the estate had been affectionately called the White House for some time, this 1901 Barber dime recalls that name becoming official.
