President Roosevelt went hunting for black bear at the border of Louisiana and Mississippi. When he was unable to find any, his hosts captured one and told the president he could claim it as a trophy. Roosevelt, who insisted his kills must be hunted fairly, refused to shoot the young bear. A candy company heard of this story and created a stuffed animal bear they named Teddy, after the merciful president. Could this 1902 half dollar have been used to buy one of the first Teddy bears, which at that time cost 15 cents?
