In 1904, the Harwick Mine in Cheswick, Pennsylvania, witnessed an explosion that killed 179 miners present. Two men, Daniel Lyle and Selwyn Taylor, entered the mine in a rescue attempt and also fell victim to the disaster. In response to the tragedy and the heroic rescue attempt, Andrew Carnegie created the still-operating Carnegie Hero Fund. Could this 1904 half eagle, minted in Philadelphia, have been part of the fund that ensured the families left behind by Lyle and Taylor were financially secure?
