In 1907, the RMS Lusitania made its maiden voyage, leaving from Liverpool and taking its passengers to New York City. The Lusitania would become one of the most influential ships of the 20th century when in 1915 it was sunk by a German submarine. The ship was carrying 138 American citizens and nearly all of them lost their lives during the disaster. The event was one of the leading factors that pushed public opinion towards entering WWI in 1917. This 1907 half eagle recalls a defining moment in US history.
