In 1909, two steamships, the Florida and the Republic, collided off of the coast of Long Island. The Florida was carrying 850 Italian immigrants and the luxury liner, the Republic, was carrying 742 passengers. Thanks to the nearby presence of two ships that responded to the calls for assistance, the six deaths attributed to the disaster were a result of the initial collision and not the sinking of the ships. Was this 1909 quarter used to book a luxury cruise with the ill-fated Republic?
