In 1910, an explosion at the coal mine in Starkville, Colorado trapped and killed all 56 miners present. The explosion is later attributed to gross negligence on the part of the Colorado Fuel & Iron Company, who had not sufficiently dampened the coal dust so that it wouldn’t be picked up into the air and ignited. The blast from this event was so large that its shockwave was felt up to seven miles away. Could this 1910 eagle, minted in Denver, have been in the pockets of one of the first responders to this event?
