In 1910, one of the greatest American writers, Mark Twain, passed away at the age of 74. Interestingly Twain had predicted his death a year prior. The writer was born in 1835, a year that Hailey’s Comet passed earth, and believed that as he came into the world with Hailey’s Comet so too would he leave with it. The day Twain died in 1910 was the day after the comet’s closest point to Earth. This 1910 half eagle recalls the intriguing passing of an intriguing American.
