After becoming the first licensed pilot in 1911, Glenn Curtiss designed the first airplane to take off and land on water in the US. Curtiss dubbed his invention “flying-boats” and developed them throughout 1912 when he made a successful test flight in San Diego. This 1912 nickel recalls this milestone flight in the field of aviation.
