In 1912, Library Trustees in San Francisco were given $75,000 from the city, originally a donation by Andrew Carnegie eleven years prior, for the purpose of creating a library building in the city’s Civic Center. This 1912 nickel, minted in San Francisco, recalls the start of construction for a public library that would open its doors in 1917.
