In 1936, Pan-Am began commercial flights from San Francisco to Honolulu. The airline had planned to start flights across the Atlantic between the East Coast and Europe and had specifically designed ocean liners to carry out the job. When diplomatic obstacles hindered this plan, the ocean liners were put to use in this flight to the capital of Hawaii. Could this 1936 half dollar, minted in San Francisco, have been carried across the Pacific in the first of its kind commercial flight?
