In 1800, the Library of Congress was founded after the idea was proposed by James Madison as far back as 1783. Shortly after John Adams took office, he signed the Act of Congress that, among other motions, called for the appropriation of $5,000 to purchase books to start the library. This 1800 half dime recalls the birth of what is currently the second largest library in the world after the British Library.
