In 1800, France and Spain signed the Treaty of Ildefenso. This treaty, kept a secret for some time, gave the territory of Louisiana back to the French. This move made it possible for the US to purchase the huge chunk of North America three years later when Napoleon needed the money more than the distant land. This 1800 half dime recalls this secret treaty that would soon allow for the US to double in size.
