In 1805, Henry Wells was born in Thetford, Vermont before his father relocated the family to New York. After making a good deal of money after founding a mail delivery firm with George Pomeroy and met William Fargo in the process. The two men established Wells & Company’s Western Express in 1845 and the company consolidated into American Express in 1850. With proceeds from their extremely successful east coast company, Wells and his partner moved to the west coast and established their bank Wells Fargo in 1853. This 1805 dime recalls the birth of a businessman who it seems could do no wrong.
