In 1843, Mexican President and General, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, ordered one tenth of a group of captured Texans to be executed. The Mexican army filled a jar with 159 white beans and 17 black beans and ordered each Texan to reach into the jar and blindly choose a bean. The seventeen men who chose black beans were promptly put to death. This 1843 half dollar recalls this sad day in Texan history.
