In 1846, General Winfield Scott commanded the little-known soldier named Robert E. Lee in the Mexican-American War. Scott, who served as the Commanding General of the United States Army for an unheard of 20 years, saw much promise in the young Virginian calling his the best soldier he had ever seen. Years later, Scott would offer Lee command of the entire Union Army, an offer refused as Lee would take up command of the Confederate forces. This 1846 half dollar recalls the rise of Robert E. Lee from relative obscurity.
