In 1846, Fort Brown of Texas was being besieged by Mexican forces in what was the first engagement between the US and Mexico in the Mexican-American War. During the siege a redheaded giant, some claim was seven feet tall, named Sarah Borginnis, rose to fame as the “Heroine of Fort Brown” for her calm demeanor while nursing wounded men during intense shelling. The US would go on to lift the siege and force a Mexican retreat. This 1846 half dollar recalls this notable engagement.
