Polk's words, "[the] cup of forbearance has been exhausted," regarding the relationship between U.S. and Mexico resonated with congress as they approved the declaration of war two days later. The Mexican-American war, which raged from 1846 to 1848, finalized the US boarder, which had been a long time coming. Due to its late start in '46, many of the battles occurred in 1847 which resulted in an early end via the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in February of the next year. The entire war was fought in either California, New Mexico, or Mexico - which included what we now consider Texas. Many of the most gallant and infamous battles, such as the Alamo and the Battle of Vera Cruz, all occurred in Mexico. One of the most pivotal battles was the Battle of Mexico City which signaled the true beginning of the end. After storming the beaches of Vera Cruz six months earlier, General Winfield Scott advanced toward the nation's capital and arrived on September 14, 1847. General Scott was ultimately successful in his siege which resulted in a huge loss for Mexico and the ultimate beginning of the end to the unnecessary war.
