In 1848, engineers tasked with creating a suspension bridge over Niagara Falls were met with a problem; how to get the first line across the 800-foot gulf. The chief engineer decided to hold a kite flying competition where the first person able to land a kite on the opposing side of the falls would earn five dollars. The plan was a success and the line was tied to the end of the kite and across the falls. And it was a local boy to claim the five-dollar award. This 1848 half cent recalls the ingenious way the first line of the Niagara Falls suspension bridge was secured.
