In 1855, the United Stated Congress set aside $30,000 in funds to procure camels to create the United States Camel Corps. The idea was proposed by later President of the Confederate States, Jefferson Davis, who in 1853 became Secretary of War. The idea behind the Camel Corps was that camels were the perfect beast of burden to travel the southwest US. The Camel Corps was never accepted into the army, as the Civil War interrupted its testing and the camels were sold. This 1855 silver dollar was minted during this fascinating experiment conducted by the US Army.
