In 1856, a steamboat named the Arabia sank in the Missouri River when it hit a submerged walnut tree. Contemporary efforts were unable to salvage the steamboat and it wasn’t until 1988 that the Arabia resurfaced. The numerous artifacts recovered from the site include dishware and jars containing food that remains edible, all of which are housed in the Arabia Steamboat Museum in Kansas City, Missouri. This 1856 cent recalls the sinking of the Arabia.
