In 1856, an American adventurer attacked Nicaragua with a group of mercenaries and set up his own government. While the US initially recognized Walker’s state, the President was pressured to change his mind when a Central American coalition declared war on the new dictator. Walker was eventually defeated and fled back to the US. Could this 1856 gold dollar have accompanied Walker on his exploit? Perhaps Walker used it to pay one of his mercenary soldiers.
