1859 witnessed the First Cortina War in which a Mexican paramilitary group squared off against the United States of Army. The conflict began when Juan Cortina, a Mexican rancher, shot the Brownsville town marshal in the arm later rode into the town with a small force and occupied it for months. This 1859 half dollar pattern recalls the beginning of an armed conflict that would grow to involve Cortina’s small army, the US Army, the Confederate Army and the Texas Ranger.
