In 1860, in response to widespread counterfeit coins and banknotes within the US, the Secret Service was established. Congress set aside $10,000 to be given to the Secretary of the Treasury to use at his discretion, which he used to for the agency. Could this 1860 gold dollar have been part of the sum given to start the organization whose job would later expand into also protecting the President?
