In 1884, near Frisco, New Mexico, deputy sheriff Elfego Baca faced off against a gang of eighty men trying to kill him. The gang had been enraged by Baca’s arrest one of their members for terrorizing the local Hispano population. Baca was able to hold off the large force, killing four of the attackers and wounding eight. This 1884 Morgan dollar, minted in San Francisco, recalls an event that is referred to as the Frisco Shootout.
