In 1904, the Olympics took place in St. Louis and is known as one of the most disorganized instances that the international games have seen. Among the notable occurrences during the games was the winning of three gold medals by an American gymnast with a wooden leg. The most bizarre incident, however, was when the winner of the marathon was driven over ten miles of the race in a car. This 1904 quarter eagle remembers an Olympic Games so poorly organized that it was almost not continued, nearly bringing the new tradition to an early end.
