In 1911, President Taft dedicated the New York Public Library building after a tiresome fourteen years of construction. The day after the library’s dedication, an estimated 40,000 people visited that 5th Avenue building that cost nine million dollars in total. This 1911 dime may have been among the first people to visit the New York Public Library.
