One of this writer's favorite issues in the entire walking liberty half dollar series, the 1918-s is an enigmatic coin.  on the one hand, a sizeable mintage of 10.2 million pieces and the insatiable need for circulating coinage during the final year of world war one virtually guaranteed that worn survivors would be plentiful in today's market.  on the other hand, few examples were deliberately spared circulation, and most of the mint state coins that have survived are limited in grade by bothersome abrasions and/or inadequate striking detail.  this, then, is one of the most challenging walkers to locate in grades at or near the gem bu level..
