In 1923, a man named Barney Pressman leased a storefront in New York City with the $500 he received for pawning off his wife’s wedding ring. The store, named Barneys, sold discounted men’s suits and would become one of the premier fashion destinations in New York and would open up twenty seven other locations. This 1923 nickel recalls the beginning of one of the most successful luxury department stores in the United States.
