Coin Description

3-LEGGED BUFFALO. VERY POPULAR VARIETY.

Unlike the 1916/16 Doubled Die Obverse and 1918/7-D (the other two Buffalo Nickel varieites that most readily command the attention of specialists), the 1937-D 3-Legged was discovered in the year of issue.  As early as 1937-1938, The Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine included advertisements for the now-famous, 3-Legged Nickel.  Having been discovered early, this variety was set aside in fairly significant numbers by contemporary collectors, and we routinely encounter examples in the VF-AU grade range.  Mint State pieces are scarce from a market availability standpoint, however, and Gems are downright rare, partially due to the lackluster appearance of most Uncirculated survivors.  In all grades, the '37-D 3-Legged Nickel is one of the most popular coins in U.S. numismatics, and it is also one of the few that is instantly recognizable outside the rare coin market.
