In 1937, American oil magnate John D. Rockefeller passed away from arteriosclerosis, a hardening of the arteries. At the time of death, Rockefeller is believed to have assets equaling over 1.5% of the United States’ economic output. When adjusted for inflation, Rockefeller’s estate was worth around $392 billion in 2016 dollars. This 1937 nickel recalls the passing of the wealthiest individual in modern history.
